“8 Ways to Be a Better Spouse”

Raising kids and keeping your relationship strong doesn't come with an instruction booklet. But these tips from clinical psychologist Alexandra Solomon, Ph.D., on how to be a better wife or husband come pretty close.  "The car in front of you paid your toll." At first, I felt confused when the toll collector made that statement. Then I realized he meant that my boyfriend (at the time) paid it for me. It was at this moment that I thought to myself, "this guy's a keeper." And I did, in fact, end up marrying him. The toll was only $1, so that wasn't why I was impressed. His gesture made me feel that he cared about me and that he was thinking of me. It reminded me of something you see in a rom-com movie. So, I try to reciprocate that kind of gesture as often as possible. Next year we will celebrate our 20-year wedding anniversary. But even sometimes I wonder: how do couples get so far? To learn more about what makes a healthy marriage, I spoke to relationship expert Alexandra Solomon, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and author of Loving Bravely. During her work with couples, she found that the most important aspect of being in a healthy relationship starts with yourself and your willingness to view marriage as a classroom. "We must accept that change is inevitable, and the best we can do is meet the changes with curiosity instead of resistance," says Dr. Solomon. "Part of viewing marriage as a classroom is knowing that we bring our past with us. It's important to be willing to look at how our old wounds, patterns, and triggers get activated with our partners." Dr. Solomon offered the following tips to help foster a healthy relationship with your partner.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF: Being a great spouse is based on making sure your basic needs—such as eating healthy food, exercising, and getting good sleep—are being met. “I know that I am a better wife when I take care of myself. When I am not getting enough sleep, exercise, and laughter, I feel bitter and irritable," says Dr. Solomon. "The more stressed out I am, the more I see my responsibilities to provide care to my husband and teens as a burden rather than a blessing. When I am burned out, I start to feel like a victim and that makes me less able to ask for what I need—help, praise, a break." Another aspect of self-care is to do things that make you happy such as going out to lunch with your friends or reading a book. "We cannot pour from an empty cup, so we need to make sure we are engaged in activities that provide meaning, connection, and joy. It is demanding to provide care for others and doing things that feel restorative and that inspired passion prevents caregiver burnout," says Dr. Solomon. And if you are feeling overwhelmed it is important to take a time out instead of making a comment you may regret later.

CONNECT THROUGH TOUCH: Dr. Solomon explained that touching your spouse communicates, "We're on the same team." "Touch helps couples maintain connection and cushions the blow of the inevitable daily irritations of family life. It's important for couples to have all kinds of touch in their relationship, not just a sexual touch," says Dr. Solomon. In working with couples Dr. Solomon found that often, touch is an ask, "Do you want to make love?" which can feel like another demand on an already-overwhelmed partner. She recommends touching outside the bedroom which can reduce stress and help couples feel connected.

MAKE TIME FOR DATES: Dr. Solomon stresses the importance of spending time alone with your partner especially when you are a parent and/or you have demanding careers. "It's so important to remember that you are partners/lovers/friends and not just two people running the small business that is your household. If evenings are hard because of kids and jobs, then you could also meet up during the day," says Dr. Solomon.

CHECK-IN: It is important to check in with each other and to think about your partner throughout the day. Dr. Solomon recommends that you should be aware of what your husband or wife is nervous or excited about and then ask questions about those feelings. "Having windows into each other's world's builds connection," says Dr. Solomon.

GIVE THEM THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT: Dr. Solomon suggests that if you feel upset about something your partner did, approach them in a descriptive rather than accusatory way. She recommends thinking about, "this is what happened, and this the story I'm telling myself about what happened." "Your efforts to separate the facts from your interpretation of the facts will go a long way toward getting you more of what you want and need—validation, recognition, accountability, empathy—and less of what you don't want—defensiveness, counter-complaint," she said. If you are the one that did something wrong then take responsibility for it and apologize.

YOUR PARTNER ISN’T YOU: When you feel upset about an issue Dr. Solomon recommends saying, "I'm feeling upset by this thing you did. Can you help me understand what's going on for you?" She says that by approaching the situation with curiosity instead of judgment means that you understand that your husband has a different way of perceiving the world. This will reduce conflicts and lead to a better relationship. "Happy couples accept that they are two different people and approach misunderstandings with curiosity rather than accusation," says Dr. Solomon.

DISAGREEMENT=OPPORTUNITY: In working with couples Dr. Solomon found that couples that have a healthy marriage view disagreement as an opportunity to understand their partner's internal world instead of a fight that needs to be "won."

ASK, DON’T ASSUME: If something is important, ask for it. Some of Dr. Solomon's clients will push back on this idea saying, "If I have to ask for it, it's meaningless." But she says that is a mistake since people aren't mind-readers. She further explains that when we don't ask for what we want, our need ends up coming out sideways, usually in the form of a complaint.

“Stop Nagging!”

"It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop [on the flat oriental roof, exposed to all kinds of weather] than in a house shared with a NAGGING, quarrelsome, and faultfinding woman" (Proverbs 21:9 AMP)

All right, crossword puzzle fans, here we go! What is a three letter word for an annoying woman? Wait, wait, wait, wait! Don't put somebody's name in there like Sue, Amy, Ana, Kim, Pam etc... Don't you dare do that! LOL!

Let's see...the three letter word is uh...NAG! N-A-G. And if you know a nag, you know there can be many cross words that come from her NAGGING mouth! I can't think of any 3-letter name, less desirable for a woman to be called than to be called a nag! I mean who wants to be known as a Nag? For that matter, who wants to be around one? But we'll get around to that one later!

HOWEVER, BEAR IN MIND: NAGS DON'T JUST HAPPEN! Oh no! NAGS ARE MADE, NOT BORN!

We're going to read Proverbs 21:9 and then skim over to verse 19 since it's on the same subject. Here's what it says, "Better to live on a corner of the roof than to share a house with a quarrelsome wife." Who says God doesn't have a sense of humor? Picture a guy living up on the roof! Can you imagine him saying in essence: "That's it, I've had it, I'm moving to the corner of the roof!" LOL!

Nagging is so bad that even the Bible says in another translation: "If you are living with a NAG, it would be better for you to go up on a roof and LIVE THERE." Not take a moment to yourself, not take a time out, but "...LIVE THERE..."! The Amplified Bible Really Hurts Your Feelings, It Says: "It is better to dwell in a CORNER of the housetop [on the flat oriental roof, exposed to all kinds of weather] than in a house shared with a NAGGING, quarrelsome, and faultfinding woman" (Proverbs 21:9)

Listen: Not only is it better to live on the roof then in a house with a nagging woman, but the Bible says it's better to live "...in a CORNER of the housetop..." you don't even get the whole roof! One of the definitions for the word “Corner” is “a difficult or awkward position” or “to force into a place or situation from which it is hard to escape”. Its Latin Origin “Cornu” literally means “TIP”. Seriously, do you realize how fed up a person would have to be to "LIVE" on the “TIP” of a rooftops "CORNER"?! And as uncomfortable, difficult and awkward as the position may be to live in, do you realize a person’s nagging can still make it a place or situation that’s hard to escape from! Meaning, they would rather "LIVE" on the TIP of a rooftops "CORNER" (as difficult as it may be) than to live in the WHOLE HOUSE with a NAG! I don’t think you want that testimony that you pushed someone that far now do you?! If not, STOP NAGGING!

Then to top it off, the text not only says it's better to "...LIVE in a CORNER of the housetop..." but it goes even further to say you should LIVE on the “TIP” of a rooftops CORNER even while "...EXPOSED TO ALL KINDS OF WEATHER..." Can you imagine being so much of a NAG that a man would rather put on his PJ's and not sit, but LIVE IN A TIP OF A CORNER OF A HOUSETOP...IN THE SNOW, SLEET, RAIN, HAIL, TORNADO, HURRICANE, FLOOD, TSUNAMI, OR STORM...than in a WHOLE HOUSE with nagging you?! Is Nagging Really That Bad? According to GOD, YES! READ YOUR BIBLE!

AND AS BAD AS THAT SOUNDS, THAT'S STILL NOT BAD ENOUGH!

Listen to what Solomon says now in verse 19, "Better to live in a DESERT than with a quarrelsome and ill tempered wife." The Good News Translation says it like this: "Better to live out in the DESERT than with a Nagging, Complaining wife" OUCH! In essence, he's saying the roof isn't even good enough, nor far enough, why? Because you can still hear her on the roof! I'm going to the DESERT; at least I can't hear her there!

So not only does a man PREFER AND IS WELL-ADVICED, BY THE BIBLE NO LESS, THAT’S IT’S BETTER TO LIVE ON THE TIP, IN A CORNER OF A ROOFTOP IN ANY KIND OF WEATHER, THAN WITH A NAG; BUT IT GOES SO FAR AS TO SAY, BOY GO LIVE IN THE DESERT! In the Desert? It's Dry, Lonely, Thirsty there and Yet the BIBLE ADVISES, GO LIVE IN THE DESERT THAN WITH A NAGGING WOMAN!

Now I've heard of aggravating or nagging somebody to the point they leave the house and go for a drive or a walk, but when you nag to the extent somebody would rather live on the tip, in the corner of a rooftop, in all kinds of weather, or better yet, move to the desert, just so they can't hear you any longer...YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHANGE YOUR NAGGING BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS!

Now, I have a word today even for potential nags, just in case you might turn out to be one some day, and a word even for those who live with a good candidate for Naghood.

If you're tempted to be one, let me remind you of this: When you push on somebody...just do it physically (seriously, walk up and physically - and gently might I add - push your spouse). Put your hand on them and push on them. Why? Because this is what you'll see: THEY'RE GOING TO GO THE OPPOSITE WAY! That's a little physical experiment you can try. Now, the more you push, the farther and faster the person's going to go IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION FROM YOU! And the very thing you're trying to make happen you will delay and maybe you'll make it never happen at all, and all because you're nagging is pushing them away from you! You’ll Do All That Nagging, And Get Absolutely Nothing In Return But a Spouse Moving Away From You!

I like what Ruth Graham, Billy Graham's wife, said. She said, "It is my job to love Billy. It's God's job to change him." It's wonderful when a woman can provide a climate of safety and security, and confidence and unconditional love in which a man might actually take the risk of changing in. But To All The Candidates For Naghood, Nagging Will Not Make That Happen! Remember: When You Push Someone, They Go In the Direction AWAY FROM YOU! YOUR NAGGING IS PUSHING THEM AWAY! WHEN YOU REALIZE SOMETHING IS NOT WORKING, TO KEEP DOING IT, IS IDIOTIC!

But let's talk about the other side of this coin; THE PERSON WHO LIVES AROUND THE NAG.

Well, the Bible talks about nags here doesn't it; a quarrelsome, contentious wife? But hang on guys. Oh, no, you're not going to go free on this one totally. Remember, nags are MADE, NOT BORN! When someone, and especially a woman (wife), from what the Bible says here, feels she isn't being heard by someone she loves, SHE WILL TALK LOUDER, AND LONGER, AND MORE OFTEN TO ENSURE SHE'S FINALLY HEARD! She's trying to find a way to get into the life of the man who promised his life to her, AND HIS LIFE INCLUDES HIS LISTENING EAR! So, a man may ask, "How'd I get a nag?" Well, look in the mirror! Because if a woman feels UNHEARD SHE'S GOING TO CONTINUE TO TALK TO THE EXTENT OF NAG!

The word "Nag" means "to harass (someone) constantly to do something to which they are averse." Its Origin dialect means "to gnaw". To "gnaw" is to "bite at or nibble persistently" So little by little, day by day, she is going to continue to "gnaw" at your ear until you finally get them to working! Listen: It takes less time to simply hear her out then to have her "gnaw" at your ear over the same topic over and over again! It's like the 2 or 3 year old who keeps going "mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy..." eventually she simply Screams “What!?!?” Because the "gnawing" is annoying!

Therefore, try listening the first time, answering her the first time, after all how much more "gnawing" are you going to be able to endure before you're Living On the Tip of the Corner of a Rooftop in the Cold, or In the Desert Baking?! In a Nutshell: Stop Creating Nags, and You'll Stop Having to Cry Over One! Maybe you have a wife who just keeps pushing, keeps nagging, keeps gnawing. Well, think about your part in helping her become like that. Maybe you've been the nag maker!
However, you can help her. How? Start to hear her out; don't make her talk louder and longer. Offer your attention to her. She's been assuming she won't be heard. So she often enters the conversation nagging! Why don't you show her that you will hear her out, and not just her first sentence either, but the whole paragraph? Believe it or not, sometimes she doesn't want you to fix anything; she just wants you to hear her heart. And then, if you're going to talk about solutions, do something about them. And love her enough to let her know that she is heard by you.
Truth is Men, TEST AND STUDIES HAVE PROVEN, Women Will Always Talk More, Longer and Louder Than Men! So Brothers, Be Smart and Spare Your Ear Drums! Hear Her Out The First Time...In Full! If Not, Remember: Your Ear Will Be Gnawed On Little By Little, Day By Day, and the Process Will Be Repetitive Until You Get a Clue! Or until you’re forced into the difficult, uncomfortable and awkward position of living on the tip of the corner of a rooftop in all kinds of weather, or in the dry, desolate desert!
You and Solomon will agree. In fact, just about everybody agrees. There's nothing worse than a nag. So, let's decide right now NOT TO BE A NAG, AND CERTAINLY NOT TO CREATE ONE!

"But she turned on the tears all the seven days of the feast. On the seventh day, WORN OUT BY HER NAGGING, he told her. Then she went and told it to her people" (Judges 14:17 MSG). Do You Realize Nagging Can Literally Wear Someone Out! That Will Make You Think Twice The Next Time He Says “I’m Tired” or “I’m Beat” or “I’m Worn Out”…It May Not Be The Job But the Work of Your Nagging Voice!

"She kept at it day after day, NAGGING and TORMENTING him. Finally, he was fed up - he couldn't take another minute of it...." (Judges 16:16-17 MSG) Nagging Is the Equivalent of Torment! And “Torment” is defined as “a severe physical or mental suffering; to annoy or tease unkindly”. It’s Latin Origin “Tormentum” literally means “Instrument of Torture”, from “Torquere” which means “To Twist”! Your Nagging Is Torture! It Is Causing Physical and Mental Suffering! Your Nagging Mouth Is An Actual Instrument of Torture! Your Nagging Is Twisting Someone Like a Pretzel! STOP IT!!!

"Delilah started NAGGING and pestering him day after day, UNTIL HE COULDN’T STAND IT ANY LONGER" (Judges 16:16 CEV) Everyone has their breaking point! And after all of Delilah’s nagging, Samson gave in and it cost him his LIFE! Your Nagging Is Detrimental to Someone’s Health! So Close Your Mouth and Back Off! Maybe Their High-Blood-Pressure Will Finally Go Down!

"...a NAGGING spouse is a leaky faucet" (Proverbs 19:13 MSG). "A NAGGING spouse is like the drip, drip, drip of a leaky faucet; You can't turn it off, and you can't get away from it" (Proverbs 27:15-16 MSG). Can You Imagine This Describing You As a Wife?! Like a Dripping Faucet That Won’t Turn Off and One You Can’t Get Away From!?! If Your Marriage Is Going To Make It You Are Going to Have to Stop Nagging! No One Wants To Be Around a Dripping Faucet Any More Than They Want To Be Around a Nagging Wife! After All, According To The Bible, They Are One In The Same!

"Better to live alone in a tumbledown shack than share a mansion with a NAGGING spouse" (Proverbs 25:24 MSG) Ok, I don’t think it gets any worse than this! Can you imagine someone PREFERRING to live in a tumbledown shack than share a mansion with you and all because of your mouth?! And by the way, the word “Tumbledown” means “falling or fallen into ruin; dilapidated”. And “dilapidated” means “a state of disrepair.” And “disrepair” means “a poor condition due to neglect”.  And as bad as that may sound, they would still rather live in a tumbledown shack that is in poor condition, falling into ruin, and completely beyond repair, than to live in a mansion with nagging you! If that doesn’t make you change, nothing will!

"It's easier to catch the wind or hold olive oil in your hand than to stop a NAGGING WIFE" (Proverbs 27:16 CEV). Ok, enough said! Selah!
